CNN’s Solidad Obrien commenting this morning about a message her mother pounded into her as a teenager: “It is better to get into Harvard because you are black, than not to get into Harvard because you are black.”
The context of this discussion was clearly that this was O’brien’s worldview – also shared by the interviewer who simply did not follow that up with further quesitoning. I will have more to say about this later, but for now this is precisely the type of nonsense that CNN passes for critical thinking, and regularly engages in when dealing with racial issues..
Please keep in mind what “race baiting” essentially is: the use of the media-purposeful or not-to reinforce (or engender) a minority group’s perceived victim-hood status. People or organizations who practice race baiting have a motive to either prop up, or instill, the idea that racism is what motivates the actions of others.
